North Dallas basketball coach Brett Cole is confident his Bulldogs have a chance to make the playoffs this season.
“If we beat the teams at our level, then we should make the fourth seed this season and make the playoffs,” said Cole, who is in his first year as the Bulldogs head coach. “It will be a battle of the last playoff spot.”
North Dallas began District 11-5A play with losses to Carrollton Creekview and Newman Smith, two teams, along with Woodrow Wilson, that Cole considers to be among the district’s top contenders.
Against Bryan Adams on Saturday, North Dallas trailed by eight (31-23) entering the fourth quarter but rallied to take the lead only to see the Cougars to tie the score in regulation play. In the overtime, the Bulldogs outscored BA 13-3.
“We were very efficient” with free throws and rebounds in the overtime, Cole said. “We were 5 for 7 [free throws] down the stretch. The ball bounced our way.”
Darius Watts led the Bulldogs with 12 points and Kobe Wrice added 10 points.
North Dallas plays at Conrad High School (12-7, 1-2 in District 11-5A) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
“We need to continue to get better each week,” Cole said. “If we’re not executing, it’s not going to go our way.”
Length, with 6-6 Watts, 6-4 Wrice and 6-6 Bryce Samuell, and guard rotation, with senior Chris Smith, senior Jayleen Donahue and sophomore Chris Jones, are the team strengths, Cole said.
“We have the talent,” Cole said. “Now we have to put in the work.”
