North Dallas showed Tuesday night it will be a force to reckon with this season in District 11-5A .

The Bulldogs (0-2 in 11-5A) led Newman Smith by 10 points in the first half before falling 62-54 at Cobb Field House.

ND basketball coach Brett Cole said before the game that Carrollton Creekview (2-0 in 11-5A) and Newman Smith (1-0 in 11-5A) are the top contenders in 11-5A. Anybody else?

The Bulldogs gave Newman Smith all it could handle. Wrice scored 17 of his 24 points in the first half. His one-handed dunk off a lob pass from Paul Gandara gave North Dallas a 33-23 lead with 3:10 left in the second quarter. ND led 35-31 at halftime.

Watts finished the game with 15 points and Gandara scored eight points.

Newman Smith rallied in the second half to take a 47-45 lead entering the fourth quarter.

A pair of Geo Manning free throws gave ND its last lead at 52-51 with 3:04 left. Newman Smith then scored, was fouled and then scored off the missed free throw for a 55-52 lead. Newman Smith slowed the game down, and scored its last seven points from the free-throw line.
