With three games in the next five days, the North Dallas Lady Bulldogs are growing up on the court.
The Lady Bulldogs play at Spruce at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The JV game is at 6 p.m. On Monday, North Dallas plays at W.T. White at 1:30 p.m. and then host Fort Worth Polytechnic at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the boys gym at North Dallas.
Last weekend, the Lady Bulldogs dropped games to Carter (36-26) and Samuell (60-46), but came back to defeat Fort Worth North Side 42-34 on Tuesday at North Side HS. Jakolby Fleming had 21 points, including a 3-point shot from half-court. Senior Teia Leroy had 9 points and 18 rebounds, and Ashley Poole added 6 points.
“They’re still developing. Taking in a lot,” Coach Erik Grayson said after a recent practice. “We’re installing a little bit more and their basketball IQ is going up. Every day we work to get better.”
Leroy is among the girls who moved from volleyball to basketball. Grayson welcomes the volleyball girls.
“We want to continue to build off the girls that just came in from volleyball,” Grayson said, “and take their energy and momentum into district.”
Grayson said there’s an adjustment going from half court to full court.
“It’s a different type of conditioning playing from a half court to a full court,” he said. “It’s just a process, getting their bodies into a rhythm and getting their muscles build up to play for 40 minutes.”
In his second year as head coach, Grayson said he’s more comfortable this season with the players.
“Their knowledge is going up. We get kids that just picked up the ball as seventh- or eighth-graders, so right now, this is their third year of playing basketball. So their IQ is steadily going up.”
North Dallas’ boys team will play at Bishop Dunne at 8 p.m. Friday. The junor varsity game is at 6:30 p.m.
