North Dallas Cross Country Coach Troy Power says the  numbers for this year’s team might be down, but with a number of returning seniors, he has high expectations for this season.

Started practicing the first week in July for those who were able to attend the morning workouts at Cole Park.

“Expecting probably about 25, which is the lowest number we’ve had since my second year here,” said Power, who is entering his fifth year as the cross country team. “But I think it’s my best team.

“This group, they’re seniors, so I’m hoping … I’ve got high hopes. But again like last year, how bad do they want it. It’s there for them. How bad do they want it.”

Some of the top returners for the boys team include Jose Gutierrez, Antonio Zaragoza, Leo Campos and Steven Do.

“We got one guy still in Mexico, Gustavo Roman. This year, he committed,” Power said. “He ran with us in the spring off-season and he’s going to be a strong runner.

“We’ve also got Chino and Tony coming back. The boys are looking good.”

Jose Rodriguez was the top boys runner last season.

On the girls side, Power has Kathy Nguyen, Xya Balderas, Fatima Rincon and Esmeralda Cuevas among the top girls runners.

Power likes having a senior group this season.

“They’re used to it and they can supply the leadership,” he said. “The strong seniors, those that provide leadership, have had jobs over the summer, so they haven’t been here. But that should be a plus there.”

And the ND coach is expecting depth from the young ones.

“We have a couple of others who will push for that sixth and seventh spot,” he said.

The Bulldogs first cross country meet is the Greenhill/Luke’s Locker 6-mile relay on Aug. 26 at Norbuck Park.
