The North Dallas volleyball team had a rare game day off on Tuesday, and Coach Alana Cummings had mixed feelings about taking the time off.
On one hand, not playing Tuesday “gives us a chance to rebuild, gives us some extra practice,” Cummings said, “and we can use this to maybe watch some film to see where to make some improvements at.”
But at the same time, the girls are in a routine and getting better with each game.
“I would rather play. We don’t need a break,” Cummings said a few minutes later. “I feel like we got a late start and every time we play, we get better and better, learning new things.”
Practices “will be a little bit harder this week,” Cummings said.
“There’s no time for a break,” she said. “That’s district’s doing, not my doing. They gave us a bye. Last bye we had was a game [against Ennis].”
The Lady Bulldogs will play its next three games at Cobb Field House, starting with Molina at 6 p.m. Friday. The JV game will follow. The team will be celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness at Friday’s game, and will be wearing pink T-shirts in honor of the occasion.
After Molina, the Lady Bulldogs play Seagoville at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Cobb, followed by Adamson at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 19, at Cobb. The seniors will be recognized before the game against Adamson. The season finale will be at Woodrow Wilson at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24.
If the Lady Bulldogs hope to make the playoffs, it will have to come in the next three games. North Dallas is in fifth place in District 12-5A.
Iris Estrada, one of the seniors on the team, said she believes the Lady Bulldogs still have a chance.
“It’s going good so far,” Estrada said. “We have a couple of losses, but I do still think we have a chance to make it to the playoffs.”
Estrada said the “hardest part is mental strength.”
“Like keeping in mind that not every ball is a loss and we can’t lose for just one mistake,” she said.
What will it take over the last four games?
“Just a lot of hustle, a lot of heart and a lot of mental strength, keeping our game up,” Estrada said. “This is my last year. We have a lot of seniors, so we’re just trying to enjoy the game.
“We’re just a bunch of great girls trying to make it to the playoffs. We’re working a lot before school and after school, so hopefully, we’ll make our goal.”
