Girls Varsity Basketball · SaNiya Lampkin, Lady Bulldogs face first-place Lincoln on Saturday

SaNiya Lampkin scored 29 points in the Lady Bulldogs’ district win over Hillcrest. The Lady Bulldogs play Lincoln next.

North Dallas’ SaNiya Lampkin is coming off one of her best games this season, scoring 29 points and grabbing eight rebounds in Wednesday’s 54-38 win over Hillcrest.

SaNiya and the Lady Bulldogs are now 3-0 in District 12-4A play, and up next is the first-place Lincoln Tigers at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Cobb Field House. The Lady Tigers are also 3-0 in district play and winners of the recent Dallas ISD Holiday Invitational tournament.

But SaNiya and the Lady Bulldogs are healthy, playing well, and ready for the challenge.

“SaNiya is playing well. She’s scoring around the basket when we need her to,” North Dallas first-year coach John Edwards said. “She’s had a lot of double rebounding games. Some big blocks when we needed it. She’s a leader on the court and the girls feed off of her. She’s played well for us.”

North Dallas plays each team twice in District 12-4A play. After Lincoln, the Lady Bulldogs close out the first half against Roosevelt and Pinkston.

“I like this district because it’s more competition,” SaNiya said. “Playing in the other district (12-5A), you really don’t have much competition and it doesn’t prepare you well enough for college … than it would be playing a better team like Lincoln.”

And better competition makes SaNiya play better.

“Bigger girls means more competition and makes me want to play better,” she said. “When it’s no competition, I feel like I’m just there.”

For the Lady Bulldogs to do well, SaNiya knows she has to score from the inside. Guards Jakolby Fleming and Ashley Poole handle the outside scoring. Na’Keisha Alridge and Maryssa Reyes help with rebounding.

“I feel like if I don’t score, then it drastically affects the team,” said SaNiya, who has college offers from Texas A&M-Commerce and Huston-Tillotson.

When asked about her best game this season, SaNiya said, “I don’t know a specific best game I’ve had, but the best games I’ve had this season have been in the Allen tournament. It’s probably because of all the people that I knew were watching me, and I felt like I had to show up.”

The North Dallas girls junior varsity is scheduled to play Lincoln at 10 a.m., followed by the varsity game at 11:30 a.m.  The North Dallas JV boys are slated to play Lincoln at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Cobb, followed by the varsity game at 4 p.m.

Seniors SaNiya Lampkin, Ashley Poole and Jakolby Fleming have been together since Spence Middle School.
