Trailing by eight runs, North Dallas loaded the bases to open the sixth inning with a hit batter, a single, and a walk. Sophia Hernandez’s double scored two runs, and Tina Nguyen drove in another run, and then Ladaysha Robinson got a hit to score another run. Aileen Arias struck out but reached base when the catcher dropped the ball. A throwing error on that play allowed allowed two more runs to score and Aileen reached third base. Aileen then scored on Patrice Leavy’s  ground out.

The North Dallas scorebook showed two outs. The Hillcrest scorebook also showed two outs and the Panthers coach even started yelling to her players on the field that there were two outs. But the infield umpire hollered “Ballgame,” and the umps left the field. The Lady Bulldogs’ rally was over, with a runner still on base.  Final score: Hillcrest 14, North Dallas 13.

The Lady Bulldogs fell to 2-1 in District 11-4A play.

Despite the loss, North Dallas Coach Chris Barnhill praised the Lady Bulldogs’ performance.

“They were really amazing. They played amazing. We had shot after shot,” he said. “Their girls just happened to be in the right spot to catch the ball. If we had put the ball to the left or the right just a little further, the game would have been totally different.”

Barnhill was also pleased with the Lady Bulldogs’ rally in the sixth.

“They know what to do. They actually did it,” Coach Barnhil said. “They just need to do it throughout the game, not just at the end.”

Robinson collected four hits, including a single in the second, a single in the third, a double in the fifth, and a single in the sixth. The Lady Bulldogs had 17 hits in the game.

The North Dallas varsity is off for spring break, and return to action on Tuesday, April 19, at the North Dallas High School softball field. The junior varsity has games scheduled this week.

Barnhill is looking forward to the rematch against Hillcrest on April 9 at North Dallas High School.

“This right here,” he said, “this rematch is going to be the district champion.”
