Bulldogs News · Summer workouts on hold, but North Dallas Coach Bobby Estes is pleased with progress so far

Coach Estes shows the athletes a step or two in their workouts.

After last Thursday’s summer workout, North Dallas Coach Bobby Estes told the athletes they were going to get a week off, and to get some rest, hydrate themselves and continue running. On Friday, the Dallas ISD decided to halt all summer conditioning workouts until July 6.

“It’s disappointing, but understandable,” Coach Estes said Monday, noting that four DISD high schools had already halted summer workouts because of the coronavirus.

“We were doing a good job at North Dallas,” he said. “We haven’t had any kids test positive. But this is for the safety of the kids.”

Actually, the program was doing really well, averaging about 80 athletes each day, Coach Estes said. The first day was 64, and then it went up to 78 on the second day, he said. The high was 96 athletes on Wednesday and then 84 the next day.

Coach Estes said the DISD will re-evaluate the conditioning program on Monday, July 6. He noted that the Houston ISD shut down its summer conditioning until July 13.

As for this week, Estes said he has been taking this week off going into July for the past 22 years.  He’s spending the break at home.

“I’m proud of where we are,” he said. “I’m proud of all the coaches. We’re establishing a new culture.”

He’s also really pleased with all the coaches helping out with the summer workouts, mentioning basketball coaches Jeremy Mason and Eric Gracia, volleyball coach Alana Cummings, and soccer coach Jose Aguirre as well as the football coaches.

“The Bulldogs really showed up,” he said.
