Boys Varsity Soccer · Bulldogs forward Gabriel Chavez has high hopes for playoffs: ‘We all fight and win as a team.’

Gabriel Chavez kicks toward the goal as he fights off a Lincoln defender on March 16 at Franklin Field in the season finale.

The Lincoln goalkeeper tries to stop Gabriel’s shot.

But the ball goes past the diving goalkeeper.

Junior Gabriel Chavez is one of three players who were on the 2019 North Dallas team that went 23-2-5 and advanced to the UIL regional quarterfinals.

Teammates Gabriel Chavez and Captain Bryan Coello

Gabriel played defense in 2019, along with starting midfielder Bryan Coello and reserve Abraham Mendez.

Today, Gabriel is one of the scoring leaders on this season’s Bulldogs team that went 12-0 in District 10-4A. In 2019, the Bulldogs finished second in district play.

“It means quite a bit for the team,” Gabriel said. “It means a lot for the team, and for those that have been here awhile fighting and struggling. We struggle as a team but in the end, we all fight and win as a team. That’s really what matters. We all get-together, we all fought, we’ve gone through a phase of emotions and struggles, and in the end, we fought and here we are.”

“I’m so happy with all my teammates,” captain Bryan Coello said. “We have to work hard and be stronger than the other teams, and go as far as we can.”

The Bulldogs were scheduled to play Graham in a warm-up game Monday at Franklin Field. North Dallas has a first-round bye in the UIL playoffs and will advance to the Area round next week.

Gabriel was asked to compare the 2019 team, which was loaded with 11 seniors, to this season’s team, which only has two seniors.

“It’s the same,” he said. “Everyone is involved, everyone fought, and everyone is going all out in district to play their part and get the title.”

And what’s his prediction on the playoffs?

“I think we’re state-bound,” he said without hesitation. “I think we can definitely make state. We can put everything together and put it on the line, definitely for state. We are ready.”

Gabriel really enjoys playing on this team.

“I love them all,” Gabriel said. “They’ve helped me through a lot, and it’s hard.”

Meanwhile, Gabriel stumbles and falls after scoring.

Gabriel is congratulated by Bryan Coello.

The 2019 Bulldogs soccer team that advanced to the regional quarterfinals included Gabriel Chavez (18), Abraham Mendez (21), and Bryan Coello (sitting, far left).

Bulldogs captain Bryan Coello scores on a free kick against Lincoln on March 16 at Franklin Field.

Bryan’s shot was so hard, the Lincoln goalie never moved. is a North Dallas High School Booster Club website.
