Boys Varsity Baseball · North Dallas baseball team gets ready for busy weekend: ‘We don’t hope to win, we expect to win’

The Bulldogs include (back row, from left) Head coach Steven De La Cerda, Tony Cazares, Bryan Martinez, Silvestre Torres, Jan Aguilar, Julian Davila, and assistant coach Elijah Perez; (front row, from left) Robert Zapata, Daniel Perez, Esteban Toscano, Logan Moreno, Joseph Mendoza, and Osvaldo Cabrera.

While being focused on the District 12-4A race, North Dallas Coach Steven De La Cerda also has his team looking ahead to the playoffs.

Last Saturday, North Dallas won 13-0 at Seagoville in a nondistrict game. This week, they’re playing at Carrollton Ranchview, and next week it’s Berkner High School.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs are 4-0 in District 12-4A play, and will play at Wilmer-Hutchins at 4:30 p.m. Friday in the final game of the first round.

“These extra games on Saturday really help us as a team,” Coach Steven De La Cerda said in an email. “It’s a way to see more pitches, get some at-bats, have pitchers who haven’t thrown during the week get some work in, and also play a different opponent we don’t ordinarily see. Saturdays are great tune-ups.”

Do they help the Bulldogs for the playoffs?

“We schedule these games to compete, give us a different look, and try to make what we do, better.  Yes, this helps for the playoffs for sure,” he said.

In Tuesday’s 15-0 win over Lincoln, Bryan Martinez and Jan Aguilar each pitched 2 innings and did not give up a hit in the victory. Robert Zapata was the leading hitter, going 3 for 3 with a double and a triple. The Bulldogs also had 12 stolen bases.

After winning district in 2018 and 2019, the Bulldogs are on track for another District 12-4A title. The Bulldogs didn’t get to compete last season for the title because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“I’m not one to look at records,” Coach De La Cerda said. “I’m a big believer if we control what we can control and we play our baseball, the rest will take care of itself. We’ve managed to build a great program here. We don’t hope to win, we expect to win. We don’t hope. And if we play the way we ought to play, we’ll be on top at the end. That’s the goal.”

The gathering at the mound includes (from left) third baserman Tony Cazares, shortstop Jan Aguilar, pitcher Joseph Mendoza, second baseman Esteban Toscano (back) and first baserman Silvestre Torres.
