Boys Varsity Baseball · Young Bulldogs ‘have the talent,’ play Pinkston next

The Bulldogs are undefeated in District 12-4A play. The Bulldogs include (front row, from left) Julian Davila, Robert Zapata, Logan Moreno, Joseph Mendoza, Jan Aguilar, Daniel Perez, and Osvaldo Cabrera; (back row, from left) Cesar Ramos, Steven Medellin, Esteban Toscano, Adrian Martinez, Silvestre Torres, Tony Cazares, Chris Lockhart, and Bryan Martinez.

Judging from this season’s scores, you wouldn’t believe that the North Dallas baseball team has only two seniors on the squad.

The Bulldogs have been mowing down their opponents, but the toughest one on the schedule is next: Pinkston at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Johnny Oates Field in West Dallas.

North Dallas is undefeated in District 12-4A play, but one of those wins is over Pinkston. Senior Joseph Mendoza pitched a one-hitter in a 5-0 win in their first meeting on April 1.

Coach Steven De La Cerda expects his young Bulldogs team to rise to the challenge. The North Dallas coaches are trying to instill the North Dallas way in his young squad.

“I don’t know that I would say it’s hard. It’s challenging in the sense that I want to get them to buy-in and understand the way we play baseball here,” he said after the win over Carter. “And we have the talent, that’s for sure. They’re young. And you have to remember they didn’t play a full season last year. So when you have a lot of sophomores, we’re teaching them the game. But we’re not short of talent.

“It’s a process of buying-in, keep working, learning, get a high IQ, and I think eventually we’re going to get there. I really believe in these kids. I think they’re great kids.”

After tonight’s game, the Bulldogs have two district games remaining: they play Lincoln on Friday and end district play against Wilmer-Hutchins on Tuesday. North Dallas is also scheduled to play at Crandall on Saturday.
